Beijing Achieves Record High Air Quality in 2024
Beijing, The Gulf Observer: Beijing recorded 290 days of good air quality in 2024, marking the highest level since air quality monitoring began, the Beijing Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau announced on Thursday.
Good air quality days accounted for 79.2 percent of the year, reflecting an increase of 19 days compared to 2023 and a substantial rise of 114 days since 2013. The number of days with heavy air pollution has seen a dramatic reduction, plummeting from 58 in 2013 to just two in 2024, a decrease of 96.6 percent.
The city’s average concentration of PM2.5, a critical indicator of fine particulate matter, stood at 30.5 micrograms per cubic meter in 2024. This marks the fourth consecutive year Beijing has met the national air quality standards for PM2.5.
Significant improvements were also observed in other key pollutants. Compared to 2013 levels, annual average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide in 2024 dropped by 65.9 percent, 50 percent, 57.1 percent, and 88.7 percent, respectively.
These advancements underscore Beijing’s long-term commitment to combating air pollution through stringent policies, technological innovations, and enhanced public awareness. As a result, the capital has set a benchmark for urban environmental management, contributing to the country’s broader efforts to achieve ecological sustainability.
