Jakarta Commits to Sustainable Blue Economy at PEMSEA 2025 Forum

Jakarta

Jakarta,, The Gulf Observer: Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo on Tuesday pledged to strengthen the capital’s role in developing a sustainable blue economy, emphasizing the need to balance economic growth with the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems.

Speaking at the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) Network of Local Government Forum 2025, Governor Pramono highlighted Jakarta’s 6,977 square kilometres of sea, 120 kilometres of coastline, and 113 islands as critical resources for shaping the city’s future.

Held under the theme “Towards a Sustainable and Inclusive Blue Economy: Linking Climate, Nature and Energy,” the forum aligns with Jakarta’s medium-term development plan, which places environmental protection and blue economy initiatives at the heart of its transformation into a sustainable global city.

The provincial government has implemented an integrated coastal management strategy to coordinate spatial planning, tidal flood control, and small island management. Governor Pramono also highlighted Jakarta’s potential for international-standard marine tourism, including destinations such as Ancol, resort-style islands, and community-based tourism.

Efforts to restore ecosystems include mangrove planting, coral transplantation, and marine habitat conservation, which also contribute to climate mitigation through “blue carbon.” In the Thousand Islands, the government supports sustainable fisheries, eco-tourism, aquaculture, and small-scale marine enterprises.

During the forum, Governor Pramono launched the “State of the Coast Jakarta 2025” report, detailing initiatives to protect coastal areas, empower local communities, and promote sustainable ocean development. He stressed that Jakarta aims to demonstrate that large cities can be environmental leaders rather than liabilities, urging that the forum produce concrete results beyond policy discussions.

Participants are scheduled to visit the Thousand Islands for mangrove and coral planting, fish restocking, and community engagement activities.

The 2025 PEMSEA forum gathered 200 participants from 24 cities across nine countries, including government officials, experts, academics, business representatives, and civil society groups, reinforcing regional collaboration on sustainable coastal and marine management.
