Oman's Shura Council Participates in 15th Plenary Session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly

Baku, The Gulf Observer: The Shura Council participated in the 15th plenary session of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Wednesday, held under the theme “The Role of Parliamentary Diplomacy in Enhancing Multilateral Cooperation.” The session saw the active participation of parliamentary delegations from various Asian countries, furthering discussions on the critical role of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering regional cooperation.

Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council, highlighted the significance of the session’s theme, emphasizing how parliamentary diplomacy plays a crucial role in enhancing cooperation and solidarity among Asian nations and international organizations. He noted that this theme calls for mutual respect, understanding, and peaceful coexistence, which are vital for addressing the increasingly complex challenges facing the world today.

Al Maawali stressed that the Sultanate of Oman has long served as a bridge between continents, cultures, and nations. This role has shaped Oman’s national identity, rooted in dialogue, openness, and a commitment to fostering peace. He further articulated that parliamentary action goes beyond legislative processes, with a focus on opening spaces for dialogue. Through parliamentary diplomacy, Oman believes in uniting efforts to tackle global challenges and advocating for peace, development, and sustainability.

A key point in Al Maawali’s address was his call for Asian parliaments to take a firm stance on the rights of the Palestinian people, underlining their right to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign state in line with international law and human rights principles. He condemned the forced displacement of Palestinians and the seizure of their lands, stating that such actions undermine international security, stability, and peace.

A significant development at the session was the granting of full membership to the Sultanate of Oman in the APA. After nearly eighteen years as an observer member since joining in 2006, Oman’s new status marks a milestone in its enhanced participation in regional and international parliamentary affairs, contributing further to discussions aimed at achieving global peace, understanding, and coexistence.

During the session, Chairman Al Maawali also held bilateral meetings with heads of participating parliamentary councils. These discussions focused on strengthening ties between the Sultanate of Oman and other nations, reinforcing Oman’s active role in regional and global parliamentary diplomacy.
