Serdar Berdimuhamedov Meets UN Special Envoy for Road Safety
Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov held a meeting with Jean Todt, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, during the International Transport and Transit Corridors: Interconnection and Development – 2024 conference in Ashgabat.
According to Turkmenistan’s official media, Todt conveyed greetings from UN Secretary-General António Guterres and commended Turkmenistan’s constructive cooperation with the UN. Reflecting on his prior visits to the country in 2013 and 2016, he highlighted the significance of initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable transport systems.
President Berdimuhamedov expressed gratitude to Todt for his participation in the forum, underscoring the conference’s role in fostering collaboration with the UN in road safety. The President outlined Turkmenistan’s progress in enhancing transport infrastructure and legislative frameworks to promote sustainability.
A key point of discussion was Turkmenistan’s proposal to designate November 26 as World Sustainable Transport Day. The two sides also reviewed major infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Ashgabat–Turkmenabat highway, and explored the work of the Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport, which Turkmenistan actively supports.
The conversation extended to the development of motorsport in Turkmenistan, with President Berdimuhamedov emphasizing ongoing efforts to improve the skills of local athletes and strengthen the sport within the country.
Both President Berdimuhamedov and Todt reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN in road safety. The meeting concluded with an exchange of best wishes, reinforcing the shared goal of advancing sustainable and safe transport solutions.
