South Africa Set to Host Landmark 46th SADC Summit in Durban
Pretoria, The Gulf Observer: South Africa is preparing to host the 46th Ordinary Southern African Development Community (SADC) Summit of Heads of State and Government in Durban on 17 August 2026, bringing together regional leaders to chart the future of economic integration, industrialisation, and sustainable development across Southern Africa.
The summit is expected to adopt key decisions aimed at accelerating regional industrialisation, strengthening infrastructure development, enhancing food security, and deepening economic integration among the bloc’s 16 member states. The gathering comes at a critical time as the region seeks coordinated responses to evolving geopolitical and economic challenges.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is also scheduled to assume the SADC Chairpersonship for the 2026–2027 term, underscoring the country’s commitment to advancing regional cooperation and promoting inclusive growth.
Addressing the media in Pretoria, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, said the country was honoured to host the summit under the theme: “Resilient, Sustainable and Inclusive Industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World.” He noted that the theme reflects the region’s shared ambition to build resilient economies through strategic investments in infrastructure, agriculture, and critical mineral value chains.
The summit process has already commenced with a series of technical meetings at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, followed by ministerial consultations before culminating in the Heads of State and Government Summit on 17 August. According to the South African government, these preparatory meetings are designed to finalise policy recommendations and decisions for endorsement by regional leaders.
The upcoming summit is expected to reinforce SADC’s long-term vision of fostering regional peace, prosperity, and sustainable development while strengthening collaboration among member states in addressing common economic and security priorities.
