Wang Yi Urges BRICS Countries to Strengthen Cooperation for Global Peace

St. Petersburg, The Gulf Observer: Wang Yi, Director of China’s Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, called on BRICS countries to enhance cooperation and develop sound strategies for global peace during the 14th meeting of BRICS high-ranking officials responsible for security matters and national security advisors. The meeting, held in the Russian city of St. Petersburg, gathered officials to discuss pressing global security challenges.

Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the importance of BRICS cooperation in the face of increasing global turbulence and security threats. He welcomed new members to the BRICS family and highlighted the growing deficits in peace and security, as well as the challenges posed by interference, containment, and external pressures on developing countries.

In his remarks, Wang stressed the significance of BRICS countries working together to explore pathways for peace, noting that the BRICS mechanism, over the past 18 years, has consistently upheld the principles of openness, inclusiveness, and win-win cooperation. He hailed BRICS as a banner for South-South cooperation and underscored its increasingly constructive role in maintaining world peace, promoting common development, enhancing global governance, and advancing democracy in international relations.

Wang highlighted the historic expansion of BRICS, which took place last year, as a demonstration of the mechanism’s vitality and appeal. He called for BRICS countries to maximize the strategic and political significance of the expanded group, focusing on independence, solidarity, and common development. Wang also urged BRICS nations to act as proponents of peaceful coexistence, multilateralism, and political settlements, while defending fairness, justice, and the rights of developing nations.

He emphasized the need for BRICS to steer the international system toward a more just and equitable direction, safeguarding world peace and tranquility. Wang reaffirmed China’s full support for Russia as the BRICS chair, pledging to deepen strategic communication, build consensus, and ensure productive outcomes at the upcoming BRICS Summit in Kazan.

During the meeting, Wang also attended a dialogue session between BRICS and Global South countries and held bilateral discussions with senior national security representatives from Brazil, Egypt, India, Iran, Serbia, and other nations.

The 14th meeting of BRICS officials responsible for security matters focused on global security threats, counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and global governance. The discussions served as essential political preparations for this year’s BRICS Summit, underscoring the importance of close cooperation among BRICS countries to address global security challenges and uphold a multipolar world based on international law. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to defending equity, justice, peace, and security through continued collaboration with like-minded partners.
