Vietnam Coast Guard Seeks Enhanced Cooperation with U.S. INL

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: Major General Vũ Trung Kiên, Deputy Commander in charge of law at the Vietnam Coast Guard Command, expressed hopes for increased collaboration with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics & Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) amidst the growing complexity of drug and human trafficking crimes. This statement was made during a reception in Hanoi for Shelby Smith-Wilson, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the INL.

During the meeting, Major General Kiên proposed that both sides bolster information sharing on crime syndicates and drug-related offenses at sea. He also advocated for the organization of training courses to enhance the capacity of Vietnamese law enforcement officers in combating drug crimes, human trafficking, and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Furthermore, he suggested that the INL continue to provide foreign language training courses for Vietnamese personnel.

The support from the U.S. Government and the INL has significantly enhanced the law enforcement capabilities of the Vietnamese coast and border guards. Various regional programs and conferences organized by the INL have facilitated Southeast Asian countries to discuss and collaborate on effective strategies to combat drug-related crimes and other illegal activities.

Shelby Smith-Wilson affirmed the U.S. Government’s commitment to partnering with the Vietnamese Government in ensuring a safe and open Indo-Pacific region. She commended the efforts of the Vietnamese forces in their fight against these crimes. Smith-Wilson highlighted the importance of the INL’s cooperation with the Vietnam Coast Guard and expressed optimism for stronger collaboration in the aforementioned areas. She also emphasized the importance of initiatives aimed at enhancing the role of women in maritime law enforcement.

This meeting underscores the ongoing efforts to strengthen international cooperation in addressing complex criminal activities and ensuring regional security and stability.
