Oman Reaffirms Commitment to Dialogue, Tolerance, and Peace at UNGA 79

New York, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman has reiterated its unwavering commitment to a foreign policy grounded in dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful resolutions to global challenges. This stance was highlighted in a speech delivered by Oman’s Foreign Minister, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Sayyid Badr emphasized that Oman’s foreign policy seeks to foster peace and establish international relations rooted in mutual respect, positive cooperation, and harmony. He expressed deep appreciation for the leadership of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, commending his efforts to uphold international law and promote global justice and peace. The Foreign Minister reaffirmed Oman’s full support for the UN’s mission to maintain international peace and security.

Oman, he noted, firmly believes in the use of legitimate, peaceful means to settle disputes and conflicts. As part of this commitment, Sayyid Badr called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and the Red Sea region. He urged the international community to address the root causes of these conflicts, particularly by ending Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territories. He also underscored Oman’s advocacy for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders.

The Foreign Minister further called for Palestine to be granted full membership in the United Nations and condemned the ongoing violence and suffering inflicted upon the Palestinian people. He stressed the importance of resolving conflicts through rational dialogue, respect for international law, and adherence to the United Nations Charter, highlighting the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

On domestic matters, Sayyid Badr underscored Oman’s commitment to social protection, sustainable development, and the empowerment of its youth. He outlined the Sultanate’s comprehensive social protection programs, which support women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. He also highlighted Oman’s initiatives in education, healthcare, and social welfare, which are aligned with global best practices.

The Foreign Minister affirmed Oman’s dedication to empowering its youth, describing them as the key to the nation’s future and the driving force behind sustainable development, innovation, and progress.

In addressing global challenges, Sayyid Badr emphasized Oman’s efforts in combating climate change. He highlighted the Sultanate’s Zero Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050, which includes investments in clean energy, green hydrogen, and nature-based solutions. These initiatives, he explained, are part of Oman’s national development framework, Oman Vision 2040, which aims to achieve economic and social progress while addressing future challenges.

Oman, he added, remains committed to supporting international cooperation on climate action, noting the country’s progress as reflected in its second voluntary national report on sustainable development.

Sayyid Badr concluded Oman’s speech by welcoming the adoption of the Future Summit Charter in 2024, applauding the collective efforts that led to its creation. He called on all UN member states to uphold the charter’s objectives, emphasizing that only through constructive cooperation and knowledge-sharing can the world achieve a safer, more prosperous future for the next generations.

At the close of his address, Sayyid Badr urged the global community to remain committed to these principles and work collectively towards a future marked by peace, security, and mutual prosperity.
