Indonesian VP Highlights ASEAN Achievements at 44th ASEAN Summit in Laos

Vientiane, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, during the 44th ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos, emphasized key achievements and progress made by ASEAN over the past decade, including the adoption of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).

Speaking at the plenary session on Wednesday, Vice President Amin described the AOIP as a strategic framework for fostering cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, enhancing ASEAN’s central role in regional matters. He also highlighted the establishment of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), noting that it is the world’s largest free trade agreement, covering nearly 30% of global trade and encompassing one-third of the world’s population.

Amin also underscored the ongoing accession of Timor-Leste into ASEAN, expressing confidence that the inclusion of the new member would bolster regional solidarity and reinforce ASEAN’s identity as an inclusive organization. Timor-Leste was accepted in principle as ASEAN’s 11th member in 2022, with its full membership roadmap being approved in 2023.

“Indonesia is proud to have played a pivotal role in ASEAN’s transformation,” Amin stated, calling for continued adaptation and cooperation among member states to face future challenges.

The 44th ASEAN Summit, hosted by Laos under the theme “Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience,” focuses on collective efforts to strengthen the ASEAN Community, seize opportunities, and address emerging challenges.

Vice President Amin leads the Indonesian delegation, which includes Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, and Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi.
