Marrakech, The Gulf Observer: At the 22nd edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival (FIFM), acclaimed Moroccan filmmaker Meryam Touzani presented her latest feature film, “Calle Málaga,” to a full house of eager cinephiles and critics.

The presentation was followed by a highly anticipated screening that drew an enthusiastic audience, reaffirming Touzani’s growing prominence in international cinema.

Centered on the life of Maria Ángeles, a 79-year-old Spanish woman living alone in Tangier, the film reflects on themes of memory, belonging, and identity. Maria’s world is disrupted when her daughter Clara arrives from Madrid with plans to sell the apartment that has shaped Maria’s quiet existence for decades. Confronted with the possibility of losing her home—and the memories held within its walls—Maria is forced into an emotional reckoning.

Set against the atmospheric backdrop of Tangier, “Calle Málaga” blends nostalgia with cultural nuance, highlighting how personal histories remain intertwined with the spaces people inhabit. The story’s emotional depth is further enriched by Touzani’s signature exploration of social and familial dynamics.

Accompanied by her husband and celebrated Moroccan filmmaker Nabil Ayouch, Touzani discussed the intimate and layered narrative of the film. She emphasized her personal connection to the story, noting that cinema provides a powerful means of bridging private experiences with broader societal realities.

Ayouch expressed immense pride in Touzani’s newest work, while Touzani acknowledged his crucial role in the film’s realization. “This film couldn’t have been done without Nabil’s support; his guidance, encouragement, and belief in my vision were invaluable,” she said.

“Calle Málaga” has already garnered international recognition, securing the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 48th Denver Film Festival and the Audience Award (Spotlight category) at the 82nd Venice Film Festival. The film now stands as one of the standout entries at this year’s FIFM, further showcasing Touzani’s mastery of portraying complex emotional and social realities with subtlety and depth.
