President Emomali Rahmon Meets UN Under-Secretaries-General Ahead of Dushanbe Water Conference

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: Emomali Rahmon, President of the Republic of Tajikistan and Leader of the Nation, on May 25 met with a group of United Nations Under-Secretaries-General who arrived in Tajikistan to participate in the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028.”
During the meeting, President Rahmon welcomed the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, Ms. Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana; the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Water, Ms. Retno Marsudi; and the Rector of the United Nations University and United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Mr. Tshilidzi Marwala.
At the outset of the meeting, President Rahmon expressed appreciation to the distinguished guests for visiting Tajikistan to attend the conference and for their continued support of the Dushanbe Water Process.
The discussions highlighted the strong cooperation between United Nations and Tajikistan, particularly in advancing the country’s global initiatives related to water resources, climate action, transport and logistics, sustainable energy, agricultural development, digitalization, and green technologies.
It was noted that 14 UN resolutions concerning water resources have been adopted at Tajikistan’s initiative, reflecting the country’s growing international role in promoting water diplomacy and sustainable development.
Both sides expressed confidence that the ongoing conference would serve as an important global platform for consolidating international efforts in the field of water and climate, while further strengthening cooperation under the Dushanbe Water Process.
The meeting also featured a detailed exchange of views on promoting the outcomes of previous conferences, ensuring the successful conduct of the current forum, and preparing for future high-level events planned for 2026 and 2028.
During discussions on cooperation with the UN University, both sides emphasized the importance of expanding scientific and practical collaboration between Tajik researchers, scientists, and experts and the prestigious international academic institution, expressing confidence that such cooperation would produce significant results.
