Hong Kong, The Gulf Observer: The United Arab Emirates national athletics team delivered an outstanding performance at the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong, securing two gold medals in the men’s and women’s 400-meter events and raising the country’s total medal tally to three.

The latest victories follow the bronze medal won by Salma Haitham Al Marri in the women’s hammer throw on the opening day of the championship, which runs through June 1.

Sulaiman Abdulrahman captured the UAE’s first gold medal in the men’s 400m final after clocking an impressive 44.85 seconds. His remarkable performance established a new championship record and a personal best, making him the first athlete in the history of the Asian U20 Championships to complete the event in under 45 seconds.

The second gold medal came through Aminat Qamar Al-Din, who claimed victory in the women’s 400m final with a time of 52.72 seconds, also achieving a new personal best.

The UAE Athletics Federation described Abdulrahman’s achievement as one of the standout performances of the competition. His record-breaking run surpassed the previous championship mark of 45.53 seconds, set by China’s Aiyilikesi’er Wumai’er during the 2024 edition of the championships, securing his place in the event’s history.

Major General Dr. Mohammed Abdullah Al Mur, President of the UAE Athletics Federation, praised the athletes’ accomplishments, stating that the two gold medals reflect the strong support and patronage extended by the UAE leadership to sports and athletes. He also highlighted the role of the National Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Sports in enhancing the capabilities of national teams.

Al Mur noted that the achievements are the result of the federation’s long-term strategic vision aimed at developing future champions capable of competing successfully at the continental and international levels. He expressed confidence that the latest success would further inspire young Emirati athletes and contribute to the continued growth of athletics in the UAE.
