US Calls Azerbaijan a “Geostrategic Partner” Highlighting Longstanding Defense Cooperation

Washington, The Gulf Observer: The United States has described Azerbaijan as a “geostrategic partner,” emphasizing the importance of expanding defense and security cooperation between the two countries, a senior Pentagon official said.

Speaking at a reception marking Azerbaijan’s Independence Day and Armed Forces Day, Andrew Loomis, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, said that Azerbaijan’s strategic location and its balanced relations with regional powers contribute to its significance for Washington.

“Azerbaijan is located in a very complex part of the world. Notably, the country maintains strong relations with both Türkiye and Israel. For all these reasons, we consider Azerbaijan a geostrategic partner,” Loomis said.

He noted that this strategic outlook was one of the key reasons behind the signing of the Charter on Strategic Partnership between the United States and Azerbaijan, underscoring that defense cooperation between the two countries is not new and has historical depth.

Loomis highlighted that for more than two decades, Azerbaijan has maintained close cooperation with the United States, including support in international security operations. He specifically pointed out Azerbaijan’s role among the last countries to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan, describing it as a sign of commitment to partnership.

He also welcomed Azerbaijan’s participation in professional military education programs and regional military exercises, saying these engagements have helped strengthen interoperability and trust between the armed forces of both nations.

“The relationships established between our servicemen contribute to the further strengthening of these ties. We are building a solid foundation for stability, and we look forward to continuing this cooperation and friendship,” he said.

Expressing confidence in the future of bilateral relations, Loomis added that the partnership between Washington and Baku is expected to deepen further in the coming years, particularly in defense and security domains.

Officials said the cooperation reflects ongoing efforts to reinforce regional stability and expand strategic defense collaboration between the United States and Azerbaijan.

The remarks were delivered in Washington, D.C. during a diplomatic reception attended by defense and diplomatic representatives.
