Earlier, Qatar announced the commencement of US–Iran negotiations in Switzerland, with Qatari and Pakistani mediators participating in efforts to facilitate the implementation of an interim agreement between the two sides.
The quadripartite engagement in Bürgenstock brought together representatives from Iran, the United States, Qatar, and Pakistan in what officials described as a significant diplomatic initiative aimed at advancing regional stability and dialogue.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed hope that the process would lead to “peace, progress and prosperity” at both regional and global levels, describing the talks as an important step toward constructive engagement.
He also acknowledged the roles of key international and regional leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Prime Minister of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, and Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for their contributions to facilitating the diplomatic process.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance reiterated Washington’s commitment to achieving a broader regional ceasefire, noting that such diplomatic processes are often complex but have shown progress in recent days. He also credited Field Marshal Asim Munir for playing a key role in supporting dialogue and facilitating engagement between the parties.
Prime Minister of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani described the meeting as historic, emphasizing that the progress achieved so far would not have been possible without the collective efforts of participating leaders. He expressed optimism that the discussions could pave the way toward a lasting agreement contributing to regional and global peace.
Officials said the talks represent an unprecedented level of engagement between the United States and Iran, with mediators underscoring the importance of continued dialogue and diplomatic cooperation in the coming rounds.
