Turkmenistan to Address Methane Emissions Reduction at Energy Investment Forum in Paris
Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Turkmenistan is set to address the effective reduction of methane emissions from the Darvaza gas crater at the upcoming Turkmen Energy Investment Forum (TEIF 2024) in Paris, as reported by Turkmen media.
During the forum, a panel discussion will focus on strategies to mitigate methane and carbon dioxide emissions in hydrocarbon production, featuring specialists from Turkmenistan alongside experts from the United Nations (UN), Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), International Energy Agency (IEA), and international companies.
Experts highlight Turkmenistan’s potential to reduce methane emissions by approximately 75%, a significant contribution aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) on sustainable energy and commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change.
Among the proposed measures is the consideration of integrating one of the observation wells near the active crater into the operational fund, facilitating intensive gas extraction from upper productive formations.
Recent satellite imagery from Capterio demonstrates a notable reduction in combustion volumes between September 2023 and February 2024, correlating with intensive gas extraction activities near the crater.
The Turkmen Energy Investment Forum (TEIF 2024) is scheduled to take place in Paris on April 24-25, providing a crucial platform to discuss and advance efforts toward sustainable energy practices and emissions reduction in Turkmenistan’s oil and gas sector.
