Baku Marathon 2026 to Attract 25,000 Runners as Global Participation Expands

Baku, The Gulf Observer: The “Baku Marathon 2026” initiated by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, is set to take place on May 3, bringing together around 25,000 participants under the slogan “Win the Wind.”
Now in its ninth edition, the marathon will feature runners from a wide range of countries, including Azerbaijan, the United States, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Türkiye, and Ukraine, reflecting its growing international appeal.
The 42-kilometer race will commence at State Flag Square and conclude at Sea Breeze Resort, offering participants a scenic route along the capital’s coastline.
The event continues to promote sports, healthy lifestyles, and community engagement, while also positioning Baku as a hub for international sporting activities.
Meanwhile, the global marathon community witnessed a historic achievement as Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe set a new benchmark at the London Marathon. The 31-year-old became the first athlete to complete a competitive marathon in under two hours, clocking one hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds.
Sawe’s record-breaking performance surpassed the previous mark of 2:00:35 set in 2023 by the late Kelvin Kiptum, marking a significant milestone in long-distance running.
