Morocco Votes in Favor as UN Endorses Two-State Solution for Palestine

Morocco

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: The United Nations General Assembly on Friday adopted a draft resolution calling for the implementation of the two-state solution, with Morocco joining 141 other nations in voting in favor of the New York Declaration on the establishment of an independent State of Palestine.

The North African kingdom, which has consistently advocated peace and dialogue as the only viable path to resolving the decades-long conflict, reaffirmed that the two-state solution remains the most realistic option to end the crisis.

Ahead of the vote, Morocco had reiterated its position during the Arab League Council meeting on September 4, stressing its rejection of Israel’s “unacceptable measures.” At the UN session today, Rabat renewed calls for an immediate ceasefire and welcomed the growing international momentum in support of Palestinian statehood.

The resolution was passed with 142 votes in favor, 10 against—including Israel, the United States, Argentina, Hungary, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, and Tonga—and 12 abstentions, including Czechia, Ethiopia, Fiji, South Sudan, and Albania.

In addition to calling for the realization of the two-state solution, the resolution deplored Israel’s blockade of Gaza, which it said has resulted in starvation and a “devastating humanitarian catastrophe and protection crisis.” It also condemned the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks on Israel.

The adoption follows an international conference hosted in July at the UN headquarters by Saudi Arabia and France, aimed at advancing efforts to end Israel’s decades-long war against the Palestinian people.

Palestine welcomed the broad international backing of the resolution, extending gratitude to all countries that denounced what it described as genocide in Gaza and endorsed the Palestinians’ right to an independent state.

Hussein Al-Sheikh, Vice President of Palestine, hailed the adoption as a “crucial step” toward ending Israeli occupation. “The growing international recognition of the State of Palestine provides a key foundation for safeguarding the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and ensuring the two-state solution, strengthening regional and international security and stability,” he said.
