Myanmar, China Discuss on Kyaukpyu Special Economic Zone Deep Seaport Project

Nay Pyi Taw, The Gulf Observer: A coordination meeting on the prerequisites for the successful implementation of the Kyaukpyu Special Economic Zone deep seaport project was convened yesterday at Meeting Hall 1 of the Ministry of Commerce in Nay Pyi Taw.

Dr. Kan Zaw, Chairman of the Myanmar Special Economic Zone Central Working Committee and Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, emphasized the need for a development plan that aligns with contemporary demands to enhance cooperation between Myanmar and China. He underscored the deep seaport project’s significance in driving economic growth for both nations and called for an expedited commencement of operations.

Union Minister for Commerce U Tun Ohn, who also serves as Vice-Chairman of the Myanmar Special Economic Zone Central Working Committee, reiterated the project’s importance for Myanmar. He noted that the Myanmar-China Economic Corridor, a strategic initiative for China, has already been launched, paving the way for increased bilateral trade and investment. He further stressed the necessity of completing the project within the stipulated timeframe.

Officials from CITIC Consortium Myanmar Port Investment Limited provided updates on completed and ongoing plans, while departmental officials discussed the Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (EIA/SIA) and the Development Plan. Following these presentations, Union Minister Dr. Kan Zaw concluded the meeting.

The Kyaukpyu Special Economic Zone deep seaport project is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing regional connectivity and economic collaboration between Myanmar and China.
