Türkiye Voices Strong Support for TRNC Against UNFICYP Mandate Extension
Ankara, The Gulf Observer: In response to the United Nations Security Council’s decision to extend the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in the Island of Cyprus (UNFICYP) for one year, Türkiye has expressed unwavering support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
The Turkish foreign ministry issued a statement on Tuesday, emphasizing its full backing for the TRNC and criticizing the UN Security Council for not seeking the consent of the Turkish Cypriots during the mandate extension. The ministry highlighted that UNFICYP’s ability to continue its activities in the TRNC is due to the goodwill of the TRNC authorities.
Türkiye stressed the importance of establishing a legal framework for UNFICYP’s activities and affirmed its complete support for any actions taken by the Turkish Cypriot administration in this regard.
Earlier, the TRNC foreign ministry denounced the UN Security Council’s decision, accusing the peacekeeping force of favoring the status quo and failing to treat the Turkish and Greek sides on the island equally.
