Qatar Urges Global Rejection of Israel's Illegal Practices in Strong Appeal to Nations and International Bodies

New York, The Gulf Observer: The State of Qatar has called on all nations and international organizations to refrain from recognizing or supporting illegal Israeli practices, reaffirming that the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) aligns with the fundamental principles of international law that must be upheld.

This statement was delivered by Her Excellency Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, during the 10th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly. The session discussed the ICJ’s advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s policies and practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), including East Jerusalem.

Her Excellency emphasized Qatar’s support for the ICJ’s advisory opinion, asserting that Israel is obligated to end its illegal occupation of Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. She highlighted that the court recognizes the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip as a unified territorial entity, whose integrity and respect must be maintained.

HE Sheikha Al Thani urged all countries to act on the ICJ’s opinion promptly and without preconditions. She stressed that Qatar views support for the Palestinian draft resolution as a humanitarian, moral, and legal obligation.

Welcoming the resumption of the UN’s emergency special session, she described the draft resolution submitted by the State of Palestine as a crucial response to the ICJ’s findings, calling on the United Nations to take immediate action to end the Israeli occupation. The resolution reflects the UN’s responsibility to resolve the Palestinian issue in line with international law and UN resolutions, especially in light of the worsening humanitarian crisis faced by the Palestinian people.

HE Sheikha Al Thani congratulated Palestine on its recent achievements at the UN, expressing hope that these steps would lead to full membership. She emphasized that the State of Palestine meets all the conditions outlined in Article 4 of the UN Charter.

Addressing the ongoing violence in Gaza, she condemned Israeli aggression, which has resulted in over 41,000 civilian deaths, hundreds of thousands of injuries, and mass displacement. Qatar, she affirmed, remains committed to mediation efforts alongside Egypt and the United States, aiming for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, the release of prisoners, continuous humanitarian aid, and protection for civilians. These efforts are intended to pave the way for a comprehensive and just political solution, in alignment with the essence of the ICJ’s advisory opinion and the Palestinian draft resolution.

HE Sheikha Al Thani reiterated Qatar’s unwavering support for the justice of the Palestinian cause and the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the recognition of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, and the right of return for Palestinian refugees.
