Prabowo to to Attend D-8 Summit in Egypt, Indonesia to Assume Chairmanship for 2026-2027

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Prabowo Subianto will represent Indonesia at the D-8 Summit in Egypt, where he will officially accept the D-8 chairmanship for the 2026-2027 period from Egypt, the current chair.

Speaking before his departure from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base in Jakarta on Tuesday, President Prabowo underscored the significance of the summit.

“The D-8 Summit is a significant occasion, especially as Indonesia will take the chairmanship starting January 1, 2026,” Prabowo stated.

The D-8, or Developing-8, is an organization for economic cooperation and development among eight developing nations. Established in 1997, its members include Indonesia, Egypt, Bangladesh, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey. All member states are also part of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

President Prabowo’s visit to Egypt marks the first state visit by an Indonesian president to the country since 2013.

In addition to participating in the D-8 Summit, President Prabowo is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to discuss enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

The trip, which will span from December 17-19, highlights Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening its role in multilateral forums and fostering collaboration among Global South nations.

Earlier, Rolliansyah Soemirat, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed President Prabowo’s attendance at the summit.

“This summit is significant as a regular meeting of the D-8 organization and the handover of the chairmanship from Egypt to Indonesia, which will chair the organization for the 2026-2027 period,” Soemirat said during a press briefing.

Soemirat also emphasized the increasing importance of the D-8 as a platform for Global South countries to expand cooperation in economic, developmental, and strategic fields.

“Indonesia will leverage President Prabowo’s presence to ensure the D-8 contributes positively to the goals of Global South countries in fostering deeper cooperation,” he concluded.
