Agadir, The Gulf Observer: Head of Government of Morocco, Aziz Akhannouch, chaired the first Board of Directors meeting of the Territorial Health Group (GST) of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region on Monday in Laayoune.

The launch of the fourth Territorial Health Group at the national level forms part of Morocco’s ongoing structural reforms aimed at reorganizing and modernizing the national healthcare system through integrated regional governance.

Speaking at the meeting, Akhannouch said the initiative held particular importance within efforts to promote sustainable development in Morocco’s southern provinces. He noted that the activation of the Territorial Health Group in the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region reflects the special attention being given to the country’s southern areas.

He added that the new framework would help bring healthcare services closer to citizens while ensuring services are adapted to the needs and characteristics of the region’s provinces.

According to the Moroccan premier, the model seeks to reorganize healthcare services and strengthen coordination among various health institutions, ranging from primary healthcare centers to university hospital facilities across the region.

The meeting also reviewed the strategic importance of the new University Hospital Centre of Laayoune, which is currently in the final stages of completion and will provide a capacity of 500 beds.

The hospital is expected to improve regional healthcare services, reduce waiting times, and support the training of medical students under the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, in line with the New Development Model for Morocco’s southern provinces.

The Territorial Health Group system is part of a broader national reform strategy aimed at improving the accessibility, efficiency, and quality of healthcare services across Morocco’s regions based on local needs and priorities.
