Top Nigerian, Kenyan comedy acts set to thrill Doha

Doha, The Gulf Observer: Popular Nigerian comedian and skit maker Mr. Funny (Oga Sabinus) and Kenyan Comedienne Mammito Eunice are set to tickle the funny bones of Qatar residents when they grace the stage at the African Night of Laughter on August 10 at the Holiday Inn Hotel.

Mr. Funny has almost 800,000 subscribers on Youtube, with nearly 140 million views on the platform and over six million followers on Instagram and X platforms. Eunice, on the other hand, boasts almost 19 million views on YouTube with nearly 2.5 million followers across Instagram, X and TikTok.

Speaking about the comedy show, the General Manager of Oryx Group Entertainment, Famous Aluya, said the show is built on creating a platform for Africans to converge and celebrate art across the continent, despite residing in Qatar.

“With the African Night of Laughter, people won’t feel too far from their countries. It’s also an opportunity for several nationalities to come together, interact, network and significantly show how Qatar is a diverse and friendly country for nations,” Aluya said.

“We hope this event will go a long way in creating a positive impact within the African community. Non-Africans can also have a feel of the African culture through entertainment. African entertainment is global today, but there are not a lot of events about that in Qatar. There’s still some work to be done,” he noted, adding that the Show will not be about comedy but other side attractions and performances from local entertainers.

Speaking about the two main acts performing, Aluya said the attraction to the comedians as two of the most popular on the continent made them prime for the Show.

“Mammito is currently the biggest female stand-up comedian in East Africa, and Mr. Funny is a phenomenon. He has grown through the African comedy ranks and passes great messages to the youth. He’s the biggest skits maker currently, and surprisingly, people don’t know how good he is as a stand-up comedian,” Aluya said.

The comedy show comes as Qatar boosts entertainment options in the country, especially in the summer months. With Qatar Tourism already a partner for the Show, Aluya urged private businesses and multinational corporations to partner with event organisers to further boost the leisure and entertainment scene in the country.

“I think one thing that is still missing is the corporate involvement in entertainment. They need to get involved and invest in entertainment. We’re getting some support from the government and private sectors, but we still believe that more can be done. Qatar has to grow in entertainment and deserves to be at the top of entertainment within the GCC.”
