Biden Administration Allocates $60 Million for Emergency Reconstruction of Collapsed Baltimore Bridge

Washington, The Gulf Observer: The Biden Administration has authorized $60 million in federal funding for the urgent reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, following its collapse after being struck by a Singapore-flagged cargo ship earlier this week, Anadolu reports.

The US Department of Transportation announced on Thursday the approval of funding to kickstart emergency reconstruction efforts for the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The total project cost is estimated to reach $2 billion.

“These funds serve as a down payment toward initial costs, and additional Emergency Relief program funding will be made available as work continues,” stated the Transportation Department.

The cargo ship, carrying nearly 4,700 containers, collided with the bridge early Tuesday morning, resulting in the tragic loss of six lives and bringing traffic to a standstill at one of the busiest ports in the United States.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expressed condolences, stating, “No one will ever forget the shocking images of a container vessel striking the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing its collapse and the tragic loss of six people.”

Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced that the largest crane on the Eastern Seaboard is en route via barge to assist in clearing the ship channel of debris. This crane, with a lifting capacity of up to 1,000 tons per load, will aid in the removal of mangled metal and concrete from the collapse.

“This is not just about Maryland; this is about the nation’s economy,” Governor Moore emphasized. “The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in America.”

Despite pledges from President Joe Biden to prioritize the bridge’s reconstruction, the allocation of federal funds has sparked criticism from Republican lawmakers concerned about excessive government spending.

US Representative Ralph Norman voiced opposition, stating, “The very thought of having the Federal Government pay for the Baltimore bridge is TOTALLY ABSURD!!” expressing concerns over financial allocations.

Meanwhile, the National Transportation Safety Board has initiated an investigation into the crash to determine its causes.
