Indonesian and Japanese Defense Ministers Discuss Military Technology Collaboration

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: On Tuesday, Indonesian Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin hosted a visit from his Japanese counterpart, General Nakatani, to explore opportunities for an exchange of military technology aimed at strengthening the defense posture of both nations.

Following the bilateral meeting at the Ministry of Defense in Central Jakarta, Brigadier General Frega Ferdinand Wenas Inkiriwang, Head of the Bureau of Defense Information, emphasized that the Indonesian Defense Ministry views Japan as one of the world’s leading military powers, particularly noted for its advanced defense technologies.

Inkiriwang expressed optimism about potential collaboration on military technology with Japan, which could significantly enhance the capabilities of the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI). He specifically highlighted that such cooperation would play a key role in bolstering Indonesia’s ability to counter emerging cyber threats.

Both delegations were reportedly in agreement on the importance of strengthening defense posture in cyberspace, underscoring the growing relevance of digital security in national defense strategies.

However, Inkiriwang clarified that the meeting did not address the much-speculated topic of co-manufacturing the Mogami-class frigate between the two countries. “The meeting focused on the transfer of defense technology, and based on my observations, the frigate was not mentioned,” he stated during the press conference.

The visit began with a military welcome ceremony, during which Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and General Nakatani saluted their respective national flags and conducted a troop inspection before proceeding to the closed-door bilateral talks.
