Kenyan President Ruto Defends Unity with Raila, Urges National Cohesion Amid Criticism

Narok, The Gulf Observer: Kenyan President William Ruto has firmly defended his growing political alliance with ODM leader Raila Odinga, pushing back against critics who have branded the move a “betrayal.” Speaking during a church service in Narok County on Sunday, the President underscored that his partnership with the former rival is a step toward national healing and inclusive development.

“Those who do not know God are telling us that unity is betrayal—how sad and shameful,” Ruto said. “We are unapologetic, we are unashamed of uniting the nation of Kenya.”

The President emphasized that bridging historical political divisions was essential for progress, stating that unity should not be misconstrued as a sign of weakness or compromise.

Ruto also took the opportunity to reaffirm his administration’s support for religious institutions, promising to continue aiding church projects despite criticism from some political and civil society quarters. He announced a donation of KSh10 million towards the construction of a church plaza in Ntulele.

“We will not be intimidated in pursuit of the work of God in our country,” he declared.

On the policy front, Ruto encouraged citizens to register for the Social Health Authority (SHA), which aims to provide comprehensive and accessible healthcare to all Kenyans. He noted that over 145,000 people were registering daily and urged no Kenyan to be left behind.

“Never again shall families be burdened by high medical costs, forcing them to organize endless harambees,” he said.

The President also revealed plans to engage with Members of Parliament to allow the Roads Levy Fund to be managed by the national government, a move intended to enhance infrastructure delivery nationwide. Currently, the fund is the subject of legal disputes between MPs and county governors.

Accompanied by a strong delegation including Governors Patrick Ole Ntutu (Narok), Joseph Ole Lenku (Kajiado), Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya, and several legislators, Ruto announced a scheduled tour of all Maa counties from May 6 to 8 as part of his development agenda.

The event saw a united front from local leaders, who pledged their support for Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027. Senator Ledama Ole Kina, once a vocal critic of the government, pledged the region’s full backing.

“I want to assure you that not a single Maasai vote will go elsewhere. Our vote will go to William Ruto and Raila Odinga in 2027,” Ole Kina stated.

Governor Ntutu and other leaders echoed the sentiment, hailing Ruto’s focus on infrastructure, education, and land reforms in marginalized areas.

“Mr President, we want to assure you that you will serve for ten years,” said Ntutu. “No President has served a single term in this country and you will not be an exception.”

Meanwhile, political analysts interpret Ruto’s strategic outreach to the Maa community as a calculated move to counter the growing influence of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is reportedly planning to launch a new political outfit.

As the 2027 elections draw nearer, Ruto’s efforts to cement alliances and champion national unity appear to be central to his strategy for securing a second term in office.
