MoH Reports Significant Decline in Dengue Cases in Indonesia

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: The Ministry of Health of Indonesia announced on Thursday a notable decrease of 30 percent in the number of dengue cases reported across the country in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Imran Pambudi, the Director of Communicable Disease Prevention and Control at the ministry, disclosed during a talk show on dengue management in Jakarta that Indonesia recorded a total of 114,720 dengue cases in 2023, resulting in 894 fatalities.

Highlighting regional statistics, Pambudi noted that West Java reported the highest number of dengue cases in 2023, totaling 19,328, while Central Java recorded the highest number of deaths at 143.

In contrast, the figures from 2022 revealed 143,176 dengue cases and 1,236 deaths, indicating a significant reduction in both cases and fatalities in 2023.

As of the 11th week of 2024, Indonesia has reported 35,556 dengue cases and 290 deaths. Once again, West Java registered the highest number of cases, standing at 10,428, with 94 fatalities.

Pambudi also highlighted that as of March 2024, 18 provinces have observed an increase in dengue cases, posing a continued challenge in combating the disease. These provinces include West Sumatra, South Sumatra, Lampung, Bengkulu, West Java, Central Java, East Java, Banten, South Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, Gorontalo, Southeast Sulawesi, West Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and Jakarta.

Addressing the challenges faced in dengue management, Pambudi emphasized the need for enhanced community understanding of dengue and the importance of eradicating mosquito breeding grounds.

Pambudi outlined several strategies for effective dengue control, including risk management, improving access to public services, reinforcing surveillance measures, and fostering collaboration between communities and governmental bodies.

The Ministry of Health remains dedicated to implementing robust measures to combat dengue and ensure the health and well-being of the Indonesian population.
