Oman Participates in 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Tashkent

Tashkent, The Gulf Observer: The Sultanate of Oman participated in the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and its accompanying meetings held in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. The five-day event saw the Omani delegation led by Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council.

During the assembly, Al Maawali met with Tanzila Narbaeva, Chairperson of the Senate of the Republic of Uzbekistan, for an official discussion session. The two leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening Omani-Uzbek relations and advancing cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including economic, investment, and legislative exchanges.

The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral ties, improving collaboration between legislative bodies, and promoting mutual expertise in governance and development. The meeting underscored the shared commitment of both nations to foster closer relations and mutual support in international and regional affairs.

The Omani delegation participated in several high-level meetings, including those of the Arab Parliamentary Group, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the Union of Parliaments of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Member States, and a session with the Gulf Councils and Latin American countries (Grulac Group). They also engaged in discussions within the IPU’s governing bodies and participated in the Women’s Parliamentarians Forum and Young Parliamentarians Forum.

A key focus of the General Assembly was the election of the President of the 150th General Assembly, the consideration of emergency items for the agenda, and a general debate titled “Parliamentary Work for Development and Social Justice.”

The delegation also participated in various IPU standing committee meetings, including those on sustainable development, democracy and human rights, international peace and security, and United Nations affairs. These discussions addressed critical issues such as conflicts impacting sustainable development, the role of parliaments in advancing the two-state solution for Palestine, and the influence of artificial intelligence on democracy, human rights, and elections.

In addition to committee sessions, the IPU organized workshops and discussion panels to foster parliamentary dialogue and peaceful coexistence. Topics included leveraging religious and moral values to advance global cooperation and enhancing parliamentary communication.

The Omani delegation included Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary-General of Majlis Al Shura; Dr. Hanifah bint Ahmed Al Qaasmi, Dr. Shamsa bint Masaud Al Shibani, Khuwaidim bin Mohammed Al Mashani, Ammar bin Salim Al Saadi, and Walid bin Salim Al Maliki, members of Majlis Al Shura, and the Secretary-General of the Shura Council.

The IPU, established in 1889, is the largest international parliamentary organization, comprising over 179 national parliaments and 65 non-permanent members. It promotes global peace, democracy, human rights, gender equality, and sustainable development through political dialogue, cooperation, and parliamentary work.
