UAE To Commemorate Emirati Women’s Day
Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will celebrate “Emirati Women’s Day” on Wednesday, honoring the outstanding achievements and contributions of Emirati women to the nation’s development. This year’s theme, “We share for tomorrow,” was chosen under the guidance of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, known as the Mother of the Nation. She is the Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF). The theme underscores the UAE’s commitment to a collaborative approach to progress, involving all segments of society in realizing its vision for the future.
The UAE has made remarkable progress in promoting gender equality, earning the seventh spot globally and the top position regionally in the Gender Inequality Index 2024, issued by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Emirati Women’s Day celebrates the nation’s advancements in women’s empowerment and highlights the ongoing importance of further development in this area.
Over the years, the UAE has implemented a series of laws and legislative amendments that address various aspects of women’s lives, including work, protection, political participation, and personal status. These reforms have significantly enhanced the status of women and contributed to the UAE’s global competitiveness.
Two years ago, the UAE introduced the Gender Balance Strategy 2022-2026, which is grounded in a clear vision for the future, aiming to establish the UAE as a global leader in gender balance. The strategy focuses on four key pillars: economic participation and entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, well-being and quality of life, protection, and global leadership and partnerships. The goal is to move beyond closing gender gaps and toward positioning the UAE as a model for exporting best practices in gender balance, especially in the post-global competitiveness phase.
With its supportive legislative environment and robust national mechanisms, the UAE has become a leading global model in protecting women’s rights. Institutions such as the General Women’s Union and the UAE Gender Balance Council have played crucial roles in empowering women and enhancing their capacities across various fields. Emirati Women’s Day serves as a powerful reminder of these achievements and the UAE’s commitment to ensuring that women continue to play a central role in the nation’s progress.
