Xi Stresses Global Responsibility and Cooperation in Talks with U.S. National Security Advisor

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted the importance of responsibility, stability, and cooperation between China and the United States during a meeting with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday. The meeting comes amid ongoing global challenges, underscoring the need for the two major powers to serve as pillars of world peace and drivers of common development.

President Xi emphasized that, as leading global powers, China and the United States bear significant responsibility to history, their people, and the world at large. He stressed the importance of solidarity and coordination in a rapidly changing and turbulent world, urging both nations to prioritize openness, progress, and cooperation over division and confrontation.

“In the face of the overarching question of whether China and the United States are rivals or partners, it is crucial to establish a correct strategic perception,” Xi remarked. He reiterated that China’s foreign policy remains open and transparent, with consistent and stable strategic intentions. China, he noted, is focused on managing its internal affairs while continuing to deepen reforms, with the aim of improving and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics in a way that suits the nation’s unique conditions.

Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to peaceful development and its readiness to collaborate with other countries for common growth. “China follows a path of peaceful development. While realizing its own development, China is also ready to work with other countries for common development and to jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind,” he stated.

Addressing the ongoing dynamics between China and the United States, Xi underscored that China’s policy toward the U.S. remains highly consistent, rooted in principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. He affirmed China’s unwavering position in safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and development interests while fostering the traditional friendship between the Chinese and American peoples.

President Xi expressed hope that the United States would view China’s development positively and rationally, seeing it as an opportunity rather than a challenge. He called for both countries to find a path of peaceful coexistence and common development, thereby maintaining and advancing the stability of China-U.S. relations.

In response, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan conveyed President Biden’s regards to President Xi and expressed gratitude for the meeting. Sullivan acknowledged the positive progress made since the San Francisco summit between the two leaders and highlighted the in-depth, candid, and constructive nature of the current round of strategic communication in China.

Sullivan reiterated that the United States does not seek a new Cold War, nor does it aim to change China’s system. He emphasized that the revitalization of U.S. alliances is not intended to be against China and reaffirmed that the U.S. does not support “Taiwan independence” or seek conflict with China. Sullivan also confirmed that the U.S. one-China policy remains unchanged and that the U.S. has no intention of using Taiwan as a tool to contain China.

Expressing optimism for the future of U.S.-China relations, Sullivan stated that President Biden looks forward to communicating with President Xi again soon. In return, President Xi conveyed his regards to President Biden and expressed his readiness to maintain contact with him to guide the development of China-U.S. relations.

The meeting between President Xi and National Security Advisor Sullivan marks a crucial step in maintaining strategic communication and finding a sustainable path for the peaceful coexistence and mutual development of the two nations.
