Morocco Climbs 20 Places in 2026 Global Peace Index, Leads Maghreb Region

Rabat, The Gulf Observer: Morocco has recorded a significant improvement in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), rising 20 places to rank 65th out of 163 countries and territories, reinforcing its position as the most peaceful nation in the Maghreb region.

According to the latest report published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Morocco ranked first in the Maghreb, seventh in Africa, and fourth among Arab countries.

The Global Peace Index assesses countries using 23 indicators across three key domains: safety and security, the level of internal and external conflict, and the degree of militarization. The study covers 99.7 percent of the world’s population and is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive assessments of global peace trends.

Morocco achieved a score of 1.895 points, with lower scores indicating higher levels of peacefulness. The country was classified within the “high” peace category, one of five classifications ranging from very high to very low levels of peace.

The latest ranking marks a notable improvement from the previous edition of the index, in which Morocco was placed 85th globally. The country now ranks ahead of several regional counterparts and continues to be recognized for its relative stability and security.

Within Africa, Mauritius emerged as the continent’s most peaceful country, ranking 18th worldwide. It was followed by Equatorial Guinea, Botswana, Gambia, Madagascar, and Namibia, with Morocco securing seventh place on the continent.

In the Arab world, Qatar led the rankings after placing 31st globally, followed by Kuwait and Oman. Morocco ranked fourth among Arab nations, ahead of Jordan.

Across the Maghreb, Tunisia ranked second after Morocco, placing 77th worldwide. Algeria came 91st, followed by Mauritania in 112th place and Libya in 125th.

Globally, Iceland retained its position as the world’s most peaceful country, a distinction it has held since 2008. It was followed by New Zealand, Switzerland, and Slovenia. Among the least peaceful nations were Ukraine, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Russia.

Despite Morocco’s strong performance, the report highlighted a continuing decline in global peace. The average level of peace worldwide fell by 0.7 percent over the past year, marking the 12th consecutive annual deterioration. According to the study, 99 countries experienced a decline in peacefulness, while only 62 recorded improvements.

The report further noted that 119 countries are now less peaceful than they were in 2008, with armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and security challenges continuing to drive the downward trend.

Morocco’s improved ranking nevertheless underscores the country’s stability and resilience amid growing global uncertainty, further strengthening its reputation as a secure destination for investment, tourism, and economic development in the region.
