PM Chính Urges Mastery of Defence Technologies to Strengthen Strategic Autonomy

Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính has called for greater technological mastery in designing, manufacturing, repairing, upgrading and modernising security and defence products to strengthen Vietnam’s self-reliance and strategic autonomy in the development of its defence industry.

The prime minister made the remarks during a working session with the Ministry of National Defence (Vietnam) on Thursday at the headquarters of Viettel Group in Hanoi.

During the meeting, officials from the defence ministry, the General Department of Defence Industry and Viettel reported on the leadership, direction and implementation of key tasks related to the development of the defence industry during the 2021–2025 period.

According to the reports, Vietnam’s defence industry has achieved notable progress under the coordinated leadership of the Party and State, the Central Military Commission (Vietnam), and the defence ministry. The sector has recorded significant innovation and technological breakthroughs, strengthening the country’s capacity to research, design and manufacture modern weapons and military equipment under Vietnamese brands.

Prime Minister Chính praised the armed forces for their achievements in advancing the defence industry over the past five years, noting that these efforts have strengthened the country’s self-reliance and contributed to building a revolutionary, elite and modern military.

Looking ahead, he urged the military to continue implementing tasks related to force building and defence industry development in accordance with the resolutions of the Party Congress and directives issued by the Party leadership, including guidance from Party General Secretary Tô Lâm.

Emphasising the importance of leveraging internal strengths and maintaining strategic autonomy, the prime minister called on the armed forces to closely monitor global and regional developments and provide timely strategic advice to the Party and State on military and defence matters.

He also instructed relevant agencies to accelerate science and technology development, innovation and digital transformation to enable Vietnam to master advanced technologies in weapons design, production, repair and modernisation.

In addition, the government will prioritise the effective implementation of major defence industry programmes and high-tech projects, while improving the quality of personnel through training and capacity-building initiatives.

Prime Minister Chính further highlighted the importance of integrating defence development with socio-economic progress, including expanding the production of dual-use technologies and products that can contribute to economic growth and improve people’s livelihoods.

Expressing confidence in the armed forces, the prime minister said that with their strong traditions of unity, democracy and innovation, the Vietnam People’s Army will successfully accomplish all assigned tasks and continue contributing to national development and security.
