Turkmenistan

Bangkok, The Gulf Observer: Turkmenistan’s delegation actively participated in key discussions during the 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, presenting the country’s vision for strengthening regional partnerships and addressing emerging global challenges.

On the sidelines of the session, a ministerial meeting of the participating countries of the United Nations Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia was held, culminating in the adoption of a Joint Statement. The meeting focused on advancing the institutional framework of the “Concept for the Development of SPECA,” outlining goals and priorities for enhancing economic cooperation among member states through 2030.

The head of the Turkmen delegation underscored that consistent implementation of the SPECA Work Plan for 2024–2025 has established a solid foundation for launching large-scale infrastructure initiatives. Emphasis was placed on the importance of developing multimodal transport connectivity, simplifying trade procedures, and adopting advanced digital solutions to boost the region’s investment appeal.

Turkmenistan reaffirmed its readiness to actively cooperate in projects financed through the SPECA Multi-Partner Trust Fund, aimed at unlocking regional economic potential and promoting inclusive growth. It was also noted that significant progress had been achieved in 2025 under Turkmenistan’s chairmanship of the programme.

Addressing the ESCAP session, the delegation highlighted key initiatives of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov focused on enhancing climate resilience across Central Asia. The statement emphasized global efforts to combat climate change and land degradation, stressing that environmental security is essential for sustainable development.

A major proposal presented by Turkmenistan was the establishment of a Regional Centre for Combating Desertification for Central Asian countries as a specialized institution under ESCAP. The initiative aims to consolidate regional efforts in environmental protection and contribute to the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

Turkmenistan’s active engagement reaffirmed its role as a responsible and proactive partner committed to building a sustainable framework for regional cooperation, addressing contemporary challenges, and promoting inclusive development based on international law and the central role of the United Nations.

At the conclusion of the session, it was decided that the 83rd ESCAP session will be held in Shanghai, China, from April 26 to 30, 2027.
