Indonesian VP Advocates for Environmental Sustainability and NZE Alignment with SDGs
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian Vice President Ma’ruf Amin underscored the critical importance of aligning efforts to achieve environmental sustainability, particularly through net-zero emissions (NZE), with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Speaking at the 2024 Nature Forum organized by Nusantara TV on February 28, Vice President Amin reiterated Indonesia’s unwavering commitment to achieving the NZE target by 2060 by prioritizing development that is environmentally oriented.
In a written statement from his office on Friday, Vice President Amin expressed his hope that the 2024 Nature Forum would serve as an inclusive platform for stakeholders, encouraging all parties to collaborate towards the shared goal of achieving NZE by 2060.
“The government’s commitment to reaching net-zero emissions is reflected in various programs,” Vice President Amin stated.
One of the key contributors to this commitment is the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, which is actively involved in realizing NZE and the Sustainable Development Goals through digitalization. Deputy Minister Nezar Patria emphasized the positive environmental impact of digital transformation, highlighting benefits such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions through decarbonization, promoting resource conservation through dematerialization, and preventing pollution through detoxification.
“Digitalization can reduce carbon gas emissions and realize environmental sustainability through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology,” Deputy Minister Patria affirmed.
Loto Srinaita Ginting, an expert staff member at the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), further elaborated on the initiatives undertaken by the ministry to contribute to decarbonization. The five-pronged approach includes the development of renewable energy, reducing dependence on coal-fired power plants, building an electric vehicle ecosystem, offering environment-based solutions, and issuing policies conducive to environmental sustainability, such as those for green and blue hydrogen.
Vice President Amin’s remarks and the insights shared during the 2024 Nature Forum highlight Indonesia’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and environmentally conscious future. The nation continues to leverage technological advancements and strategic policies to align its development with global sustainability goals, making significant strides towards a greener and more resilient future.
