Saudi Arabia Unveils National Policy for the Elimination of Forced Labor

Riyadh, The Gulf Observer: Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of its National Policy for the Elimination of Forced Labor, marking a historic step towards ensuring a safe and equitable working environment for all. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD), establishes Saudi Arabia as the first Arab nation to adopt a comprehensive policy targeting the eradication of forced labor.
The Kingdom’s commitment to global labor standards is underscored by its status as the first Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country to ratify the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) 2014 Protocol to the Forced Labor Convention. The new policy reflects Saudi Arabia’s dedication to combating forced labor at both national and international levels.
The policy adopts a multifaceted approach centered on prevention, victim protection, and enhanced collaboration at the local, regional, and global levels. Key elements include safeguarding workers’ rights and providing robust support systems for victims of forced labor, including access to legal, social, and economic assistance.
Speaking on the significance of this initiative, Sattam Alharbi, Deputy Minister for Control and Development of the Work Environment, said:
“The introduction of the National Policy for the Elimination of Forced Labor is an important milestone for Saudi Arabia. It demonstrates our collective commitment to creating a safe environment for everyone living and working in our country, ensuring their rights are protected. This policy builds on our ongoing efforts to safeguard employees’ rights in collaboration with global and local partners.”
The policy emphasizes victim-centered initiatives to aid recovery and prevent re-victimization, with measures ensuring access to justice and care systems. By prioritizing these efforts, the Kingdom seeks to empower victims while fostering a fair and inclusive work environment.
Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with international organizations, including the ILO, to further enhance working conditions and protect labor rights.
This initiative is a significant stride in the Kingdom’s broader labor reform agenda, reflecting its dedication to upholding human rights and setting a precedent for the region.
