Turkmenistan and UNICEF Launch Groundbreaking “Green School” Initiative

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: The Ministry of Education of Turkmenistan, in collaboration with UNICEF, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding to launch the “Green School” programme, a pioneering educational initiative aimed at transforming schools into sustainable and energy-efficient learning environments.
This joint project marks a first-of-its-kind effort in Central Asia and sets a regional benchmark for integrating climate action, environmental awareness, and sustainable development into the education system. The initiative will span from pre-school to higher education, promoting lifelong climate-conscious learning.
The Green School programme seeks to embed sustainability principles across all facets of school life—from interactive classroom activities to the construction and management of energy-efficient school facilities. It encourages both students and teachers to engage actively in climate solutions, fostering innovation and responsibility towards the environment.
Key features of the initiative include:
- Teacher training for integrating climate education into school curricula
- Student-led projects on renewable energy, waste reduction, and ecosystem protection
- Creation of healthier, lower-carbon learning environments
- A certification process culminating in the awarding of a Green School Certificate
Jalpa Ratna, UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan, praised the collaboration, stating:
“This initiative reflects Turkmenistan’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and its proactive approach to building climate-resilient communities. It also underscores the shared vision of UNICEF and the Ministry of Education as drivers of sustainable development. Together, we ensure that children and young people in Turkmenistan are not only prepared for the future, but actively shape it.”
Through this innovative and learner-centred programme, Turkmenistan aims to empower its youth with the knowledge, tools, and platforms needed to become climate leaders of tomorrow.
